BPK and INTOSAI Members Hold a Meeting in Bandung to Discuss Environmental Issues

Bandung, Tuesday (July 17, 2018) - The Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK) held a meeting with members of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) in Bandung, West Java, today. At the meeting, Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of 41 member states of INTOSAI WGEA discussed the latest environmental issues in line with the objectives of the working group, that is, to encourage SAIs to use the mandate in the environmental protection policy process.

The series of activities in Bandung are started on July 16, 2018 and will last until July 19, 2018. Before the hold of the meeting, on July 16, the BPK Board Member V BPK, Isma Yatun as the host together with all delegates conducted an introductory program of city management with an environmental perspective. Apart from providing information about Bandung tourism, the Bandung City Government presented to all delegates regarding the implementation of greening cities policy comprising of office housing, land, and landscape of Bandung.

Further today, in the opening remark, the Chairman of BPK, Moermahadi Soerja Djanegara mentioned that the meeting could be a forum for knowledge and experiences’ sharing related to environmental issues. There are 3 major themes discussed during the meeting, namely how to improve urban environmental quality, sustainable land management, and environmental and community audits. The three themes are consistent with the theme of the 2018 High-Level Political Forum, that is, Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies, reflected in objectives of the sustainable development.

Invited speakers for the panel discussion, who will provide useful perspectives and experiences regarding environmental audit among others are the Auditor General of the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO), the Mayor of Surabaya City, the Head of the Peat Restoration Agency, the Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the Director General of Social Forestry and the Environmental Partnership of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the Director General of Cipta Karya of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

"SAIs should play a strategic role in maintaining environmental quality and encouraging sustainable development. They must also ensure that policies, regulations and control systems developed by the Government are carried out as they should,” Chairman of BPK explained.

To support these efforts, the panel discussed among others on the climate change, the land management and soil quality, the environmental health, and the biodiversity audit. In this occasion, BPK presented the results of performance audits on spatial planning in Jakarta Special Region, environmental data, performance audits on program effectiveness and tourism activities in supporting sustainable development of West Manggarai Regional Government, and performance audit results on the water management of Brantas watershed.

The BPK is the Chairman and Secretariat of the INTOSAI WGEA since 2014. In the period of 2017-2019, BPK is responsible for the achievement of the WGEA projects. According to the working plan, the INTOSAI WGEA conducts activities such as preparing the audit guidance, research projects, conducting audit cooperation, surveys and training, as well as disseminating information related to environmental issues.
