BPK Announces Best Short Films at the Awarding Night of 2018 Film Festival "Kawal Harta Negara"

Jakarta (Tuesday, 16 October 2018) – The Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK) announced the best work in the Awarding Night of Oversee State Assets (Kawal Harta Negara) Film Festival (FFHKN) Year 2018. The event that was held at the Usmar Ismail Film Building (PPHUI), Jakarta, on today (16/10) was the peak event of the FFHKN Year 2018 series which has been taking place since April 2018. The event was opened by BPK Chairman, Moermahadi Soerja Djanegara and Acting Director of USAID Indonesia’s Office of Governance, Rights, and Resilience, Mr. Anders Mantius and was attended by BPK Board Members, officials of BPK and USAID, judges, filmmakers, and festival participants coming from students and public.

FFHKN Year 2018 was the second-year collaboration program between BPK and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under CEGAH program. Through this Film Festival, BPK invited public to make fiction short movies, documentaries and citizen journalism videos with the theme of overseeing state assets. “BPK continues to seek supports from public participation. BPK will continuously educate and disseminate its duties and authorities to the public to make people aware and care about BPK’s role and work to oversee state assets, whose results can be enjoyed by public,” BPK Chairman explained in his remarks.

“The cooperative efforts are important in increasing public scrutiny and transparency and preventing corruption in the future. In this context, USAID is proud to work with BPK. We are very happy to be here today with BPK to give appreciation to the winner of this year’s film for the creative directors who made these films,” Anders Mantius said.

Series of FFHKN was started by its launching on 24 April 2018 in Jakarta. This festival has numbers of program including festival roadshow to six cities (Banda Aceh, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Makassar, Ambon and Bandung). The roadshow aimed to get public, particularly youth generation to understand state assets and participate actively in overseeing state assets. There was also workshop on the making process of short movies and citizen journalism videos. The keynote speakers of the FFHKN roadshow were film makers and television practitioners including Ismail Basbeth, Danial Rifki, Naya Anindita, Thomas Herda, Dewi Laila Sari and Jati Savitri.

Another program of the 2018 FFHKN is story idea competition and short movie competition. The result of the story idea competition was two best ideas for fiction and documentary short movies from those six cities. There were 468 proposals received for the idea story competition program. 89 stories were then selected to join Pitching Forum process. 11 out of the 89 stories (7 fictions and 4 documentaries) were selected and then produced through the funding support of film production.

While from the short movie competition, the FFHKN committee received 208 film and video from various regions in Indonesia including Bandung, Purbalingga, Malang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Makassar to Merauke. 34 nomination for citizen journalism movies and videos were selected in the judging process. All these categories were open for students and public. The submission was done from 20 April 2018 and closed on 20 August 2918. The winner was appointed by the judges’ team consisting of BPK and USAID team together with director Slamet Rahardjo Djarot, director Ismail Basbeth, Dewi Laila Sari (communication expert of UN and co-founder of NET-CJ), writer and movie critic Totot Indrarto, News Gathering Manager of Kompas TV Alexander Wibisono, and Kompas Journalist Edna Caroline.

The end of the 2018 FFHKN program was marked by the Awarding Night of FFHKN. The event was attended by nominee representatives and public. They were invited to give appreciation and support to all filmmakers who had submitted their works in the 2018 FFHKN.
