Reappointment of BPK RI as External Auditor of UN Atomic Agency

Indonesia supports the continuous technical cooperation program developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), particularly on the use of nuclear technology for peace purposes, as well as to support the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The Indonesian Ambassador to Vienna/Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to IAEA, Dr. Darmansjah Djumala as Head of Indonesian Delegation to the 61st IAEA General Conference on 18-22 September 2017 in Vienna, Austria, deems this technical cooperation to be important. The General Assembly of IAEA Conference also endorsed BPK RI as the external auditor of IAEA.

Ambassador Djumala also asserts that Indonesia, as one of the countries that have always received IAEA technical cooperation, has now reached excellent capacity in several aspects that the country now has the capacity to provide technical assistance to other IAEA member states.

Indonesia also appreciates the support of IAEA in nuclear energy development program in Indonesia, especially on the construction of Non-Commercial Reactor (RDNK/Reaktor Daya Non Komersial) / Experimental Reactor (RDE/Reaktor Daya Eksperimental) as announced in 2015 by BATAN, the Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency. Ambassador Djumala also explains about the results from national polls on public acceptance of nuclear energy program that have shown an increase in public acceptance within the last 5 years, with the highest percentage reached at the end of 2016 by 77.53 per cent.

In relation to the 61st IAEA General Conference, Indonesia organized two side events, i.e. two discussions with the themes of 'Regional Capacity Building Initiative: Promoting Capacity Building through Resource Mobilization' and 'Applying Small Modular Reactor Technology: More than just a User', respectively. Indonesia also organized an exhibition with the theme 'Enhancing Health Quality of Indonesian People' which featured the topic of the use of national nuclear science and technology for the purpose of improving the quality of health and medicine.

The 61st IAEA General Conference also endorsed that the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia, BPK RI, shall be re-appointed as the external auditor of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 2018-2019. In this regard, Ambassador Djumala affirms Indonesia’s commitment to provide quality audit service to ensure accountability and transparency in many of the IAEA activities, in both safety and security as well as in the promotion on the use of nuclear technology for peace purposes.

IAEA is an international organization based in Vienna, Austria, aimed at promoting the use of nuclear technology for peace and development purposes as well as to prevent nuclear development for military purposes.
