BPK Made Significant Contribution to the 26th UN/INTOSAI Symposium

VIENNA, BPK Public Relations – The Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK RI) attended the 26th UN/INTOSAI Symposium, held from April 16th to 18th, 2024, at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria. Every two years, INTOSAI organizes this event in collaboration with the UN. The event was attended by 224 participants from 82 Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) throughout the world.

The symposium, themed "Implementation of SDG 13 on climate action: Role, contribution and experience of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs)", focused on SAI practices in auditing the impacts of climate change, conditions that facilitates audit on climate action, and strengthening climate action through audit results. The symposium began with opening remarks from INTOSAI Secretary General Margit Kraker, Under-Secretary-General for Economic Development, UNDESA Li Junhua, and Chair of the INTOSAI Governing Board Bruno Dantas.

During the symposium, Chair of BPK, Isma Yatun, delivered a presentation on Indonesia's experiences in conducting audit on climate change. Isma Yatun highlighted the important role of audit institutions in addressing climate change by ensuring sustained commitment from governments and stakeholders to effectively implement climate-related policies, as stipulated in the Paris Agreement.

The Chair of BPK also highlighted Indonesia's vulnerability to climate change threats as a large archipelagic nation, outlining a comprehensive strategy integrated into national priorities. BPK’s audit efforts focus on both climate change mitigation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on the energy sector's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

In terms of climate change mitigation, BPK has audited the effectiveness of policies, regulations, and investments targeted at accelerating the energy transition by lowering reliance on fossil fuels. These audits have impacted regulatory reforms in the renewable energy sector, encouraging investment and infrastructure development. BPK’s audit results, among other things, contributes to increase the availability of renewable energy supplies.

Regarding climate change adaptation, BPK’s audit focuses on water resources management and disaster management. The inspection results encourage government, private sector, non-profit organizations, and local communities to work together to foster the development of water supply infrastructure and promote proactive risk mitigation measures.

In addition, BPK also served as a moderator in sub-theme 3: Strengthening Climate Action-Impacts of Climate Change Audits, which was represented by Expert Staff for Environment and Sustainable Development Edward G H Simanjuntak. BPK's active involvement in this symposium reaffirms its commitment to supporting global endeavours to address climate change and achieve sustainable development.
