Conducting an Audit on Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Board Member IV of BPK Visits B3 Waste Management Company

Bogor, BPK Public Relations – Board Member IV of the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia, Haerul Saleh, and Director General of Law Enforcement of Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Rasio Ridho Sani, conducted a work visit to PT Prasadha Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLi) in Bogor, West Java on Monday (20/3).

Board Member IV conveyed that purpose of the work visit was to obtain data and information related to hazardous and toxic (B3) waste management process carried out by PT. PPLi, as well as challenges and risks faced including the risks of environmental pollution and efforts to mitigate such risks.

BPK would also like to know the results of the Ministry’s monitoring on waste management carried out by PT PPLi and map of B3 waste management in Indonesia, starting from waste producers, waste managers, waste supervisors, and B3 waste control mechanism.

Knowledge gained from the work visit would then be used in the BPK’s audit of the Ministry of LHK. Information of the risks of B3 waste management could also become the basis for improving B3 waste management system.

Board Member IV explained that the results of BPK’s audit on the effectiveness of monitoring on management and restoration of land contaminated with B3 waste for period of 2017 to 2020 concluded that there were some issues in terms of regulations and policies, institutions and resources, implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluation.

“If such issues are not addressed immediately, it will affect the effectiveness of monitoring on management and restoration of land contaminated with B3 waste,” Board Member IV emphasized.

Based on data from the Ministry of LHK, the volume of B3 waste from mining, energy, and oil and gas managed in the period of 2015 to 2019 ranged from 39 million tons to 90 million tons, while the volume of waste utilized was only around 3 to 4 million tons.

“Given the data does not show the volume of B3 waste generated by mining, energy, and oil and gas activities, thus the volume of B3 waste that are not managed/utilized and has potential to have negative impact to the surrounding is unidentified,” he stressed.

Accompanied the Board Member IV during the work visit were Director General of Audit IV, Syamsudin, President Director of PT PPLi, Yoshiaki Chida, Director of Audit IV.B, Pemut Aryo Wibowo, as well as BPK auditors and employees of PT PPLi.
