BPK Emphasizes the Key Role of SAIs in the Accountability and Transparency of Climate Change Initiatives at the SAI20 Summit
Jakarta, Wednesday, June 19, 2024 – Chair of the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK), Isma Yatun attended the SAI20 Summit 2024, a meeting of the Chair of the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of G20 member countries, took place in Belém, Brazil in June 17-18, 2024. The SAI Brazil, which hosted the SAI20 2024, continued the leadership from the SAI20 2023 by SAI India and the initiation of the SAI20 2022 by SAI Indonesia, focusing on the priority concerns of Climate Finance & Fight against Poverty and Hunger.
In her opening statement, Isma Yatun conveyed the importance of integrating the outcomes of the SAI20, promoted by SAI Brazil, into the global community through both the G20 and the INTOSAI framework. "We applaud SAI Brazil for its emphasis on Climate Finance and the Fight against Hunger and Poverty, both are crucial to achieving the SDGs. SAIs must play a key role in improving the accountability and transparency of climate change initiatives. SAI's oversight function will strengthen governance and ensure that desired results are achieved in the fight against hunger and poverty," Isma explained.
The SAI20 Summit was attended by SAIs from G20 member countries, namely South Africa, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Invited SAIs from Angola, Egypt, Poland, Portugal, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Guineau-Bissau, Maldives, Sao Tome and Principe, and the United Arab Emirates.
The SAI20 Summit in Brazil agreed on recommendations that SAIs are key actors in achieving the SDGs, in accordance with their mandate to promote transparency, accountability, efficiency, and good governance and encourage positive policies to overcome inequality, good governance, and hunger. In addition, the SAI20 also promotes constructive policies to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on society and ensures that no one is left behind.
The SAI20 is a forum for the SAIs of G20 member countries to contribute to the G20 community and voice their opinions, as well as convey the results of the SAIs community to G20 member countries with considerable influence, so that they can benefit. The SAI20 was established at the initiative of BPK as part of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency in 2022.
