BPK Encourages PTN-BH Audit Committee to Play an Active Role in Implementing Good University Governance
Jakarta, Tuesday (November 19, 2024) – Board Member VI of the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK), Fathan Subchi, attended the Audit Committee Communication Forum (FKKA) meeting of 21 PTNBH in Indonesia at the Hasanuddin University Hotel (Unhas), Makassar, on Friday (11/14/2024). In his presentation, Fathan Subchi underscored that BPK’s objective is to enhance the quality of audits in a strategic, anticipatory and responsive manner. "BPK will study public policies and problems by paying attention to strategic issues that are of concern to the community or stakeholders," he explained.
He also highlighted the importance of fostering greater collaboration and cooperation between the Audit Committee and BPK, the external auditor of State Universities with Legal Entities (PTN-BH). This effort was undertaken to establish high-quality higher education institutions characterized by independent governance and decision-making, entities that carry out accountability and transparency functions, and the ability to manage funds independently, transparently, and accountably.
In line with this, Fathan Subchi underlined the role of the Audit Committee as stipulated in the PTN-BH statutes. These responsibilities included the supervision or oversight of the internal audit process of PTN-BH management in non-academic fields, the conduct of risk monitoring, and the submission of an annual report to the Board of Trustees (MWA).
BPK RI has conducted audits of 12 (twelve) PTN-BH as of 2023. "To date, there are still several recommendations that have not been followed up by PTN-BH management. In resolving these recommendations, the participation and encouragement of the PTN-BH management, particularly from the Audit Committee, are expected to expedite the follow-up on BPK RI's recommendations," stated Fathan Subchi.
Additionally, Fathan Subchi highlighted that the Audit Committee ought to concentrate on oversight within the framework of realizing good governance, notably strong university governance that aligns with the principles of good corporate governance. This emphasis derived from the fact that, to date, the implementation of good governance in PTN-BH management throughout Indonesia has failed to meet the expectations. "The implementation of good governance presents a future challenge for the duties and functions of the Audit Committee, that it should be prioritized and be implemented in every PTN-BH," concluded Fathan Subchi.
