The Importance of a Joint Platform for Audit Institutions to Deal with Global Issues

SEOUL, Thursday (May 8, 2024) –The Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK) emphasizes the need for a clear platform for audit institutions or Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) to deal with global issues. This was highlighted by Vice Chair of BPK, Hendra Susanto, who was present at the first MIKTA SAIs meeting (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, and Australia) in Seoul, Korea, on May 7-9 2024. "The platform will be the foundation to provide a clear role and contributions of MIKTA SAIs to MIKTA community and other related communities," explained Hendra Susanto.

At the opening ceremony, Chair of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) Korea, Jaehae Choe, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the support given to the initiative to establish MIKTA SAIs. Choe hopes that the meeting would strengthen solidarity among MIKTA SAIs, especially wile dealing with global issues. The SAIs meeting discussed two important aspects: SAI's Preparedness for Future Risks and the Direction and Challenges of SAI Innovation.

MIKTA SAIs meeting was attended by Supreme Audit Institutions from Indonesia (BPK), Korea, Turkey, and Australia. The meeting discussed the Role of MIKTA SAI's Meeting and Way Forward, SAI Preparedness for Future Risks, and the Direction and Challenges of SAI Innovation.

To enrich the discussion, MIKTA SAIs meeting presented resource persons and experts in the field of the Role of MIKTA and Global Challenges, Dr. Hyunjin Choi, Professor from Kyunghaee University; Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert Soonmin Bae, PhD, Head of AI2XL Research Institute and Director of the Responsible AI Center at KT; and climate change expert Dr. Taeyong Jung, Professor at Yonsei University.

MIKTA SAIs meeting was beneficial for improving BPK's capacity, particularly in terms of its readiness to face future risks and innovation development, as well as strengthening international support and cooperation.

The outcomes of MIKTA SAIs meeting will be presented at the next meeting of SAI Leaders of MIKTA countries, as well as at the SAI20 Summit, which will take place in Brazil on 15-18 June 2024.

MIKTA cooperation forum was first initiated during an informal meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers in Los Cabos, Mexico, in February 2012. MIKTA was formally established in 2013 after the first MIKTA Foreign Ministers' Meeting took place during the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly. As a 'middle power' forum, MIKTA serves as a 'consensus maker' and 'bridge builder' between developing and developed countries.

Vice Chair of BPK also held a bilateral meeting with Chair of BAI Commissioner to strengthen the audit capacity of the two audit institutions.
